Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley

HOOD: Wolgan Valley, Blue Mountains NSW
VIBE: How’s the serenity
PROPERTY SIZE: 40 free-standing villas on 7,000 pristine acres
ROOM STYLE: Aussie country chic
WE LOVE: the comprehensive range of activities on offer for guests (with superb kids ranger programs!) and the environmental ethos amongst all staff.

WORDS BY: Dave Goldman

It took my breath away immediately on arrival

Only a three hour drive from Sydney and nestled between two magnificent national parks (Wollemi National Park and Gardens of Stone National Park in the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area), Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley sits within its own 7,000 acre conservation reserve – offering a quintessentially Australian bush experience.

Lodge with the locals

Upon arrival, we were met at the property entrance by one of their R&M Williams clad staff – this nod to the iconic Aussie country label carries through to all staff uniforms. From there, we were transferred by private 4WD to the 1832 Heritage Homestead for check-in and a warm tea in the Homestead’s Valley Bar and Terrance lounge.

Beauty personified

ROOM

An ideal retreat for families, the heritage designed Wollemi Villa feels like a private lodge or house. It features a large dining room, lounge area, gas fireplace, two bedrooms, 2.5 luxurious bathrooms, and temperature controlled private indoor/outdoor pool. Outstanding.

We quickly checked it all out and jumped on our complimentary bikes to acquaint ourselves with the property and fill our lungs with the crisp mountain air. I found myself constantly looking up at the magnificent, regal sandstone escarpments that envelope and border Wolgan Valley. You really feel like you are in a real life water colour painting with an ever changing palette reflecting the whims of the clouds, weather, and time of the day.

I can only imagine how many artists have been inspired in the past and will have their creativity ignited in the future when in these surroundings.

DINING

All produce for guests at Wolgan is brought in from within a 160km radius – underlining a commitment to supporting local farmers and businesses.

Private picnics can be enjoyed across the property

The food and beverage options are spot on – all meals are taken in different dining venues throughout The Homestead.

The Wolgan Dining Room, blessed with wonderful valley views, hosts daily breakfast and dinner to a level of perfection and class one would expect from the One&Only Resorts. Lunch in the Country Kitchen, located on the lower floor of the Homestead, was a daily highlight – I am a huge fan of the Ploughman’s Lunch and this was the best I have ever had. The home-made sausage rolls were a hit with the family – the lunch menu in general perfect for a family on the go in the beautiful countryside.

ACTIVITIES

The highlight of Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley is the comprehensive range of activities and experiences on offer and how well suited this property is for family and in particular multi-generational travel.

There are three activity tiers to choose from: scheduled at no charge, signature, and private touring at cost.

While we were in the Spa (more about this in a moment), our kids enjoyed a ‘Wolgan Ranger’ activity: a small 4WD escort around part of the property seeking out wildlife like kangaroos, wallaroos and wombats, and discovering remnants of a tree that had only days earlier been struck by lightning (the kids are still talking about this).

186
A river running through Wolgan Valley’s 7,000 acre reserve

Wolgan Valley is nature at its best – raw, honest and educational.

The highlight was a 3 hour ‘All Terrain Aussie Adventure’ where guests are escorted to the fringe of the property on all terrain vehicles. There we ‘made camp’ by a small river, lit a fire, made  damper, and brewed some billy tea over the open flames. Once done we made our way home in the company of hundreds of kangaroos jumping around us.

I haven’t had this sort of connection with the land and its animals since Northern Africa many years ago.

SPA

After a hard day getting your country on the Spa at Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley is a must. There are six secluded, double treatment rooms all offering a magical Australian spa experience in one of the country’s most beautiful surroundings imaginable. Alternatively, treatments can be arranged in the comfort and privacy of your accommodation.

The Spa offers an expansive menu: face therapies, body rituals, a host of massages, and signature experiences including a four hour sunset ritual treatment.

Viva Espana! Madrid’s Magical Hotel Villa Magna

HOOD: Central Madrid, Spain
VIBE: Sophisticated
PROPERTY SIZE: 150 rooms
ROOM STYLE: Contemporary
WE LOVE: The location – right in the heart of Madrid

WORDS BY: Ian Pryer – visited Nov 2015

In the course of ones travels, there are occasional confluences resulting in an outstanding and memorable experience.

A recent and first trip to Madrid combined with a stay at Villa Magna was magical.

Hotel Villa Magna, a former palace although totally remodeled, is located on Paseo de la Castellana. This extraordinary tree-lined boulevard (it cannot be called a street) is one of the major thoroughfares of Madrid but because of its width, traffic never presents a problem. As one draws up to Hotel Villa Magna, one cannot fail to notice the efficiency and sophistication with which the whole arrival process is handled. An air of calm pervades as luggage quietly disappears and one is escorted to the reception desk for a noticeably smooth check-in.

The décor of the lobby, soft muted tones, interesting sculptures, comfortable furniture foretell of what one might expect from a stay at Hotel Villa Magna. Directly off the lobby is their very pleasant bar (they believe that the best gin and tonics in Madrid are served here) and lounge area. Although both are accessible to non-guests, neither is ever overcrowded.

Lobby bar

Adjacent to the bar is a casual indoor/outdoor eating area offering a range of snacks and tapas appropriate to the time of day.

Patio Magnum
Indoor/outdoor dining

On the other side of the lobby is Restaurant Villa Magna which serves as a breakfast room in the morning and then becomes one of Madrid’s leading restaurants at lunch and dinner.

_JAP6307
Restaurant Villa Magna

The rooms are as comfortable as the lobby would suggest, fitted with every convenience one would expect from a hotel of this standard (daily newspaper, safe, tea and coffee making facility etc.). Even the television set, when not in use, looks like a mirror.

Prestige 02
Grand Prestige Room

Adjacent to reception is the Concierge for whom nothing appears to be too much trouble. Their restaurant recommendations were all superb. My wife and I weren’t necessarily looking for gourmet experiences but rather establishments where we could rub shoulders with locals. Lateral at 89 Paseo de la Castellana was “buzzing” at 9 p.m. Platea, just around the corner from the hotel is truly a Centro de Ocio Gastronomica, a very upmarket food court with live music and a wonderful atmosphere. We were directed by the Concierge to an area about 300m from the hotel where we were told we would find any number of tapas bars. We ate and drank most reasonably at Makkila but am sure that any would have been equally wonderful.

An absolute Madrid must – El Rastro Market on a Sunday morning: a taxi ride (fares are most reasonable and cabs readily available) from the hotel should not to be missed. If shopping is important, Madrid’s biggest department store, El Corte Ingles, is directly behind the hotel and connected to it. The main entrance of El Corte is on Calle Serrano, Madrid’s most elegant shopping street with every conceivable “brand”. The major art galleries are within walking distance or a short taxi ride away. Like most cities, Madrid has a “hop-on, hop-off” bus and there is a stop less than 200 m. from the hotel.

In this most elegant and exciting city, Hotel Villa Magna is truly wonderful.

As a Goldman/Travelcall client, the following amenities are included:

  • Buffet breakfast in Restaurant Villa Magna each day
  • Tapas and wine once during the stay
  • Room upgrade, subject to availability
  • Complimentary internet access

The Datai Langkawi

HOOD: Teluk Datai
VIBE: Zen
PROPERTY SIZE: 125 rooms
ROOM STYLE: Indigenous
WE LOVE: The beach. National Geographic has rated Datai Bay as one of the top 10 beaches in the world.

WORDS BY: Ana Wilkinson – visited Nov 2015

When the hotel transfer, with boys aged 8 to 6 is a pleasure, you know you’re set for a memorable stay; our driver could not have been any more helpful or professional. On arrival we were greeted by a warm welcome, a cool towel and a cold drink, then directed to check-in at the serene lobby lounge, overlooking the Andaman Sea. It was at this moment we realised we were about to get the keys to a truly unique holiday.

Datai-Gallery-47

The stunning architecture and deep rain forest location created an unforgettable backdrop to the jungle orchestra. We were overwhelmed by an immediate sense of peace and tranquility, a blessing on a relatively short stay (5 nights).

The unique Datai experience is one that lingers long after your stay and will no doubt ensure that you return again and again.

ACCOMMODATION

Datai-Gallery-90

Our first 3 nights were accommodated in one of the superb Rain Forest Villas, which share a connecting rear deck with the Villa next door – perfect for multi generational holidays. Generous in size and luxuriously appointed, the Villas have every conceivable modern convenience plus many added extras. The cavernous bathroom is amazingly executed, with the finest details well considered. The high ceilings and timber paneling in the main room are design highlights and provide a lovely refuge from the midday heat, the occasional tropical downpour, and the nocturnal cacophony.

CULINARY

Datai-Gallery-9.jpg

With the bar set so impossibly high it is a real credit to the Datai that their cuisine is the equal of the surroundings. Breakfast is an experience to savour. We loved having the knowledgeable waiting staff guide us through a treasure trove of international delicacies, each one as authentic as it was delicious. From the flakiest roti, croissant, or Danish pastry to the creamiest chawan mushi, foie gras or lobster omelette – there simply is no finer way to start the day. Except, maybe, the addition of a glass of complimentary champagne or a stiff Bloody Mary.

ACTIVITIES

Datai-Gallery-52.jpg

Days were invariably whiled away by the jaw-dropping beach club. The pool, bar and restaurant perfectly compliment what is surely one of the world’s premier beaches. Here you can try a spot of stand-up paddling to work off the breakfast excess, kayak the 1.3km sea-straight to your own deserted tropical island, or take out a catamaran and ride the ocean breeze. If golf is more to your taste, the course will leave you almost wanting to tee off into the water hazards. For those who prefer their adventure in a book, a few hours nestled poolside or under a tree on a sun lounge is just the tonic!

… as is an actual gin and tonic, which, naturally, they do to perfection.

Datai-Gallery-16Datai-Gallery-56

EVENING ENTERTAINMENT

Datai-Gallery-59.jpg

Nights at the Datai revolve around dining at any of their world-class restaurants. True regional taste can be found perched high in the tree-tops at the Pavilion, an impeccable rendition of Southern Thai cuisine. Similarly the Mamak fare on offer at the Gulai is sublime. For those who find their villa too much of a thriller, even the in-room dining at the Datai is a cut above, arriving steaming hot and fragrant, and invariably delightful.

HIGHLIGHT

Datai-Gallery-80

We were extremely fortunate to spend our final two nights at the exquisite two bedroom Beach Villa. Words alone seem inadequate to convey its magnificence. It really needs to be seen to be believed. The private entry, discreet butler service and four connecting absolute beachfront pavilions combine to create an opulent sanctuary that leaves you wanting to stay forever. With its state of the art audio visual installations, elegant contemporary design and seamlessly integrated indoor, outdoor living areas it’s no wonder the Beach Villas are teaming with birdsong and calling monkeys – even the local wildlife think this hotel is worth shouting about.

The St. Regis Bangkok – bespoke luxury + butler service in the heart of Bangkok

HOOD: Rajadamri Rd, Bangkok
VIBE: Sophisticated elegance
PROPERTY SIZE: 228 rooms (including 51 suites)
ROOM STYLE: Urban chic
WE LOVE: The attentive St Regis Butler Service and air-conditioned walkway to BTS Rajadamri Station

WORDS BY: Dave Goldman

Bangkok sits firmly in my Top 3 cities to visit and that I just did for a recent weekend away. There is so much to experience, enjoy and learn in The City Of Angels and no better base to do this than the outstanding St. Regis Bangkok.

Opened in 2012, it went straight to Condé Naste Traveller’s 2012 ‘Best New Hotels’ Hot List – scoring for its location (primly positioned among the city’s best shopping, tourist attractions and restaurants) and service.

St. Regis signature transfer service
St. Regis signature transfer service

The St. Regis service is second to none and it starts the minute you arrive. Welcomed at the door by the smiling concierge team, we were whisked off to reception for a seamless, and seriously fast, check-in.

ROOMS:

Upon entry into our stunning suite, I was taken by the floor to ceiling views of the Royal Bangkok Sport Club and Bangkok Lumphini Park. A great location for morning walks or jogs before the day heats up, or for those who prefer their exercise a little more vicarious, to watch the locals partake in their morning Tai Chai.

Offering a contemporary haven for the discerning guest, the Caroline Astor Suites exude comfortable elegance, complete with spectacular views and corner locations.

The highlight of the rooms would have to be the impeccable lighting and generous size bathrooms, all complete with rain showers.

All guests at The St. Regis Bangkok enjoy the services of  The St. Regis Butler Service – a treasured hallmark of the St. Regis experience for over one hundred years. Butlers can assist with unpacking and packing, unlimited tea or coffee deliveries, garment pressing and any other want or whim during your stay.

POOL AND SPA:

For more decadence and indulgence, the on-site Elemis Spa, inspired by nature and defined by science, provides therapies in an impeccable setting of elegant, Thai-inspired luxury, reflecting a fine balance of tradition and innovation.

StRegis_Bangkok_ElemisSpa
Elemis Spa. Located on the hotel’s 15th floor, the spa’s serene environment is a haven of quiet rejuvenation, far removed from the hectic pace of life in Bangkok.

In addition to 16 treatment areas, including two Couple’s Treatment Suites, the spa features Rasul chambers where guests can experience an ancient Arabian bathing ritual that incorporates mineral-rich clay, heat and steam to cleanse, exfoliate, absorb toxins, increase circulation and soften the skin.

Try the foot ritual wading pool experience – you’ll never leave.

Main Swimming pool
Surrounded by lush tropical plants, the pool area overlooks the cityscape and the Royal Bangkok Sports Club’s golf course. Our outdoor Pool Bar features an all-day menu and full beverage service with poolside service. Comfortable chaise longues offer the perfect setting for breathing deep and enjoying poolside pleasures.

We also enjoyed lounging around the property’s outdoor pool and working away the jetlag in the neighboring Exercise Room. Fantastic pool service (the fresh coconut water and poolside snacks are a great touch), great food and clear cool water are just the medicine for escaping the Bangkok heat.

DINING:

There are several dining options at St. Regis Bangkok. Breakfast at VIU (a top experience and an inclusion in our exclusive rates) includes wonderful buffet options, home-made yoghurt and mouth watering made to order omelets.

ZUMA_Bangkok
London’s top restaurant, ZUMA, graces the ground level and highly recommended for a night out and for guests not wanting to venture out too far for dinner.

I also recommend The St.Regis Terrace Bar for a quick night cap before you fall into a 300-thread-count-Egyptian-cotton-induced-slumber, in your signature St. Regis King bed for the night. An utter joy after a bustling day in Bangkok.

AMENITIES: (book with us for)

  • Daily full breakfast, for up to two in room guests
  • One dinner for two guests OR USD100 food and beverage credit
  • St Regis Butler Service
  • Free WIFI

ADDITIONAL TIPS:

  • Make sure to visit Baipai Cooking School to learn how to cook Thai style (and eat your delicious creation!).
  • We used a wonderful tour operator called Smiling Albino to take us around and off the beaten track to explore some unique Bangkok experiences. Our guide Orr was terrific who escorted us on a longtail boat up the Chao Phraya River to the Wat Pho for some monk chanting and blessings, some great local community visits (via Tuk Tuk and private air conditioned van), the Arab quarter, flower markets of Bangkok and ending up at Sky Bar at Lebua Tower. A brilliant few hours of peace, culture , love and Thai hospitality.
  • No shopping visit to Bangkok would be complete without visiting MBK for some bespoke tailoring, gadgets and foot massage. For those travellers wanting more upmarket, try Siam Paragon and Siam Centre.
  • Dinner at Paste and Nahm were nothing short of sensational. Thai cuisine at its best.

Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam review: The fabled canals have a new leading light

HOOD: Amsterdam City Centre
VIBE: Sophisticated
PROPERTY SIZE: 93 rooms and suites
ROOM STYLE:  Classic
WE LOVE:  That is has the largest private garden in Amsterdam
INSIDER TIP: Rent a bicycle and take in the sights along the many designated bike paths. The hotel’s Guerlain Spa can heal any tired muscles – Tip courtesy of Virtuoso

WORDS BY: Chris Cheyne, Goldman Travel

As we overlooked the canal, to have the late Summer breeze come through, carrying with it the sounds of weekenders out on their boats was just lovely.

Late August and early September are beautiful times of the year to visit Amsterdam. The sun is out late, the weather still warm, the sunsets long, most of the crowds have dissipated, but there’s still a great buzz in the air. People spend their weekends on leisure craft on the canals, eating great food and drinking wine and enjoying the leisurely pace along the waterways – calling out greetings to the passers by on the banks.

Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam: The Waldorf has one of the most iconic historic locations of Amsterdam. Experience timeless elegance and warm hospitality on the grand 17th century canal palaces of the Herengracht. Enjoy a wealth of world-class amenities and personalized service in the heart of Amsterdam.

Situated on the most stylish of Amsterdam’s canals, the Herrengracht (“Gentleman’s Canal”), the Waldorf Astoria combines six grand mansions, creating the most superb and genteel hotel in Amsterdam.

For those who enjoy a bit of history and architecture, in transforming the houses into the hotel, many of the original features were maintained and preserved, such as beautiful 17th century banisters on the staircases, and wonderful artworks which reflect its proximity to both the Hermitage and Rijksmuseum.

Along with the usual array of excellent food and beverage outlets you’d expect from the Waldorf Astoria brand, there are a few additional features of this hotel which are quite unique for Amsterdam properties. First and foremost of these (particularly for the warmer months) is the largest private garden in Amsterdam. Beautifully manicured flower beds and lawns share the space with a well curated selection of sculptures, which are also a dominant feature in the corridor to… the indoor pool! One of a very few hotels in Amsterdam to have one, the pool area looks out onto the garden, has a large steam room and sauna, and showers that I would want to recreate in my home if I had the space.

One of the Waldorf Astoria’s signature common areas, Peacock Alley, is interpreted in Amsterdam with beautiful shades of blue and white, reflecting (by design or not) the classic colours of Holland’s famous Delft ceramics. This palette extends to the rest of the hotel, creating a calm and elegant environment. On arrival, you can select one of the five signature scents on offer to have your bed linens sprayed each evening to create an even more personal experience while in residence. Each has been crafted exclusively for the hotel.

Designer digs. Armani Hotel Milan in review

HOOD: Montenapoleone area in Milano
VIBE: every week is fashion week
PROPERTY SIZE: 95 designer guest rooms and suites
ROOM STYLE:  contemporary chic
WE LOVE:  it’s Armani
INSIDER TIP: allocate a few post-shopping/pre-aperitivo hours to recharge in the relaxation pool on the 7th floor Armani/SPA

WORDS BY: Joshua Ogilvie, SmartFlyer Australia

At the heart of Milan’s world-famous fashion district, the Armani Hotel Milano, a personal project of iconic Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani, is his vision of comfort and hospitality.

Every furnishing and fixture in the 95 guestrooms and suites has been chosen for its sculptural, aesthetic and sensual qualities.

Armani Premiere Room
Armani Premiere Room

The rooms and suites are elegant, sophisticated, and to borrow a fashion phrase, look perfectly tailored. There’s not an ostentatious object to be found; this handsome hotel is tactile and presented in perfect taste. Rooms are spacious, lighting atmospheric, and all are appointed with Armani’s luxurious amenities.

We didn’t want to leave the 200sqm Armani Presidential suite, complete with full-service cocktail bar and kitchen. Not without hosting aperitivo anyway!

Armani/Bamboo Bar
Armani/Bamboo Bar

The 7th floor the Armani/Ristorante and the Armani/Bamboo Bar offer uninterrupted and 360 degree views of city’s skyline, stretching as far as the Italian Alps. The Armani/Ristorante draws on Italian excellence with international influences while the Armani/Bamboo Bar is as much the perfect place for a vibrant aperitivo as it is the perfect place to be seen drinking one.

On the hotel’s top floor, the panoramic Armani/SPA boasts 1,000-square-meters of beauty, offering tailored treatments (each guest starts with a personal consultation to determine the perfect program), steam and sauna experiences, and a unique relaxation pool with its louvered window roof and walls. It’s refined, luxurious and utterly relaxing.

The hotel’s building, not surprisingly a perfect A in shape, is home to Milan’s Armani-designed, Japanese juggernaut, Nobu. The hotel bookends the North end of of Via Monte Napoleone, itself home to Valentino, Céline, Dior, Versace, Gucci, Fendi, Prada, Salvatore Ferragamo, Louis Vuitton and co.

This hotel is at the heart of, and embodies the designer soul of Milan.

The hotel’s clientele are so cool it could put lesser likes out of their comfort zone. But if you’re confident in your own skin (or rocking designer duds among the glitterati) the hotel itself is warm, welcoming, and makes you feel a million dollars.

Mission accomplished Mr Armani.
